Rufus is a dapper, genteel creature rescued off of the streets of Downtown Los Angeles. He is the quintessential gentle Tom cat: big cheeks, sweet demeanor, and he gets along great with other cats so long as they are nice to him. Mostly what he wants is to follow you around for pets and head bonks. However, life on the streets did instill in him a profound dislike of dogs, and he is extremely aggressive with them. But with friendly cats, people, children and/or kittens, he is an absolute delight and a perfect gentleman. He is both talkative and playful, and loves being the center of attention.
Rufus is FIV positive, another likely legacy of life on the streets. Fortunately, FIV is not casually transmissible between cats, it requires a deep bite wound that is rather unheard of in a home setting and certainly not with a gentle love like Rufus. There’s a fair amount of bad, superficial information floating around the Internet about FIV and the veterinary community typically takes an extremely risk-averse approach to it as it’s simpler than explaining nuance to their clients. If you really want to learn about FIV, the start here for a basic FAQ. If you want to read a peer-reviewed study on whether FIV is casually transmissible, then go here. If you’d like to read a much more detailed and comprehensive FAQ about FIV, we highly recommend this site, which also has information about care, health monitoring, diet, and supplements used by owners of FIV cats.
If you’re interested in meeting Rufus or in adopting him, or have any questions about FIV, please reach out to his foster dad. Rufus is such a special soul, we promise you will not regret it!
