Update from the Stray Cat Alliance
We have been following stories arising from the L.A. County Health Department’s recent campaign to trap and euthanize feral cats. The following was brought to our attention by the Stray Cat Alliance:
LA County Health Department to trap feral cats.
We have been making phone calls. We found out the elementary school has hired a private pest control company called Stanley pest control, to trap the cats. The 4 (we were also told 2) cats and 2 opossums were then brought to Carson shelter. Joe Ramirez from the County says they are suspect of Murine Typhus although we have no idea where he got his evidence. The 2 opossums are missing in actions (read below) and they would be more likely to carry murine typhus as fleas who carry it like opossums. Why let them go? We have no idea.
Stray Cat Alliance is bailing out the 4 cats that were trapped once
they are cleared of murine typhus. We are trying to get in touch with
the school and ask them to stop. There were 2 opossums trapped and we do not know where they are. We asked the Carson shelter supervisor Gil Moreno and he said that they have a new policy and they do not accept wildlife (this is good). We are afraid for the poor opossums as we had wildlife rehabbers waiting to save their lives too.
The cats are being trapped from the following locations:
Imperial Avenue School
12495 Isis Ave
Hawthorne, 90250Del Aire Park
12601 Isis Ave
Hawthorne, 90250We are working on speaking with the Principal once we can locate
his/her number and talk about TNR, moving feeding stations etc. Please do not call the school and threaten in any way. We will handle this. We hope we can make friends with them.We have had other incidents with Joe Ramirez from County saying cats
cause all kinds of horrible diseases however when asked for the facts,
he has few. We must not let these people get away with this just
because they work for the County. We have science on our side. For now, it seems as though this private trapping company is the only
one trapping. Please cross post this. We need to know who, if anyone, is feeding in
or around the school or park.Thank you,
Christi Metropole
